Don't go into the woods.

How many times when we were young, our parents would say to us don't go into the woods. Why? What's in the woods that can harm us, frighten us, destroy us? These are the many questions that all of us when we were young would ask ourselves, and what did we do, most of us disobeyed our parents and took a chance and went into the woods.

Growing up in the Wilmington township area near the Kankakee River, there were lots of woods, and I would go out by myself, and just walk through and look at all the things that's were created just for my eyes to see. One time, I was walking and suddenly a truck came barreling at me, scared me half to death, it almost ran me off the road I got off as quick as I could, and this man stopped and said what are you doing out here? I said I'm just walking, and he said you're on private property get out of here. So I went home as quickly as possible.

There was an old cabin in the woods that you could see from a distance, but we never had the strength and courage to walk up and see who it was that lived there. But we figured it must have been this particular man who was on the old road who almost ran me over, and then we noticed a path that led towards the old cabin.

The old cabin had a towpath and I decided one day in the Autumn of the year to walk through that area and see what was going on in the back deep woods.

And to make it even better I went with a good friend of mine at dusk. Now we had flashlights, but we dared not use them for fear whoever that man was would see us in the woods, and come out after us. As we made our way towards his cabin, strange sounds throughout the woods we're coming towards us and going away from us. Owls were hooting deer were snorking, and all of a sudden right before our very eyes, was a very large looking beast of a man. We ran so fast as if our lives depends upon it. When we got home we were telling our friends. Some people told us that we had an encounter with a Sasquatch, all I kept saying was I have no idea what it was but it scared us enough and we never went back. Maybe that's why we were told to never go into the woods. What do you think?

Haunted Lisle, Illinois

Benedictine University Might Be Haunted?   October 16, 2019   Dielle Ochotorena Perspectives Editor Benedictine Hall circa 1901. Photo Credit: Benedictine University Archives We definitely have a lot of school ‘spirit’ here at Benedictine University. So much so we’re considered  one of the most haunted universities  in the United States. We have plenty of ghosts and no darling, I’m not talking about ghosting people. I mean real actual ghosts, spirits, apparitions, shadows, demons, Casper; whatever you want to call them; they’re all over campus, and who knows, they might be in your dorm room right now, or chilling next to you as you read this article. All the ghost stories come from the 130-year-old history of Benedictine University and its neighbors Benet Academy and St. Procopius Abbey across the street. So, let me give you some backstory. History matters and this is how these stories come about. In 1887, St. Procopius College was founded by Benedictine monks from the St. Procopius Pa

Spring Valley House–Sulfur Springs Hotel

The  Spring Valley House–Sulfur Springs Hotel  is a historic former hotel located along Dee Bennett Road in rural  Utica Township ,  LaSalle County ,  Illinois . Built circa 1849, the hotel is unusually large for a rural hotel in the area. The brick and limestone building, which features  Greek Revival  elements and vernacular stonework, is four stories tall and 63 by 42 feet (19 by 13 m) in area. Its size is likely a result of it serving two different audiences; due to its proximity to the  Illinois River  and a major stagecoach line, it hosted travelers passing through the area, but it also functioned as a resort destination due to the area's  hot springs . Three such springs are located on the site of the hotel, one of which has a  spring house  built over it. The story goes, that a young man was working the farm and fell into the well and drown. His spirit moves about the area and the Hotel's third floor as well.  The opening of the  Chicago and Rock Island Railroad

Haunted Benet Academy Lisle Illinois

BENET ACADEMY St. Procopius Abbey Cemetery There is a Catholic High School in Lisle Illinois, by the name of Benet Academy. In its early years, it was Saint Procopius Academy and in its much earlier years, it was called St. Joseph Bohemian orphanage, conducted by the Benedictine Sisters of the Sacred Heart and the monks of Saint Procopius Abbey. I will try to give you more of a history of the orphanage later on but I would like to talk a little bit about my experiences when I was stationed at the Academy for 20 years. It was the late summer of 1973, I (Brother Ed, OSB) was assigned to Benet Academy to be the high school stationery, which meant I was going to be in charge with another monk by the name of Brother Columban, OSB who was the treasurer and the head stationer for the Academy. The main job of the stationer was to order all the school books and supplies for the students as well as the faculty and administration. It was also the job of the stationer to set up the school
